KURITA, CARING FOR SOIL

Contaminated and degraded soil in large urban areas is a continuing and growing problem. Below bricks, concrete, asphalt, and all kinds of human constructions, soil has been covered and forgotten. As a consequence, urban human inhabitants have lost basic knowledge and connection with the environment, contributing to the negative impacts of our climate crisis.

Water resilience is key for most of big cities around the globe, where negative consequences such as cloudbursts, flooding or drought are already happening. A well-structured soil with good biological diversity will provide a solution for better water absorption and retention, also known as a soil carbon sponge.

“Kurita. Care for soil” works as a pedagogical tool for citizens to reconnect with soil and recognise its importance to fight the water crisis, biodiversity loss and the climate change. Using the doctor-patient game as a parallel, I aim to share knowledge about soil remediation techniques that can be used to engage citizens in a collaborative and fun way.

Kurita consist of on an annual subscription were different tools and learnings are provided along the year, shaped in scaled up pharmaceutical packages. Each season provides different knowledge and techniques accordingly. Phytoremediation plants to detox the ground, food for fungi, compost tea recipes or Soil decompactor seeds, are some of the examples that Kurita provides along the year.

Kurita collect experts knowledge in a fun and practical tool for a broader audience to learn what can be done to fight the problems of our times.
